Marilyn Martinez dies at 52

November 13, 2007

Marilyn Martinez, a stand-up comic known for sassy humor with the Original Latin Divas of Comedy and other Latina troupes, died here on Nov. 3. She was 52.

The cause was complications from colon cancer, her husband, John David Crowder, said.

“She used to tell me she was a triple minority,” Mr. Crowder said. “She was fat, she was a woman, she was Hispanic.”

In Los Angeles in the mid-1990s, Ms. Martinez joined a Latina troupe, the Hot and Spicy Mamitas. She also became a member of the Hot Tamales with Eva Longoria and was the “anchor” of the “Latin Divas of Comedy” Showtime television special this year. It was conceived in the same vein as the hit “Latin Kings of Comedy,” her manager, Scott Montoya, said.

Ms. Martinez’s routines often included frank talk about sex and men. “She was getting away with saying a lot of crazy stuff,” said the comedian Carlos Mencia, who performed alongside Ms. Martinez. “It wasn’t like, ‘I’m a woman and let’s talk about flowers and shopping.’ But she could do clean if you wanted her to.”

Her screen credits include parts in the movies “Pauly Shore Is Dead” (2003) and “For da Love of Money” (2002); the television series “My Wife and Kids” in 2001; and, in 2004, a reality show, “Urban Jungle,” on SíTV.

Reared in Denver, Ms. Martinez tap-danced on a local television show as a child before channeling her love of acting, and food, into stand-up routines. Mr. Montoya said of her comedy, “Either you were slightly offended by it or you laughed along with her.”

Ms. Martinez’s memorial service, on Wednesday, was held at the Comedy Store.
