Three of Salem's leading Hispanic action groups tonight will host the first of two community forums aimed at tackling the city's youth gang problem.

The forum is at McKay High School in northeast Salem. It will be in Spanish, and directed toward Latino families and communities affected by gang violence, said Levi Herrera, director of the Mano a Mano Family Center.

The second forum, also at McKay, will be in English and will focus on community-wide initiatives to keep gangs from becoming more prevalent and violent. It will be held Dec. 5.

Leading local law enforcement officials have agreed to attend, Herrera said. They include the Marion County district attorney and sheriff, the police chiefs from Salem and Keizer and leaders from the Marion County juvenile department.

"We're trying to reach to the Latino community first," Herrera said. "What we have found in working with the Latino community, most of the time they're unaware of the resources available to help them."

The forums are hosted by Mano a Mano, Latinos Unidos Siempre and the Salem/Keizer Coalition for Equality. They are hoping at least 150 people attend each forum.

Police are concerned that some recent events, including a shootout on a residential street in Keizer involving a hail of bullets, mark a potential resurgence in gang activity.

Herrera said community leaders see this as the time to act if they want to head off gangs becoming so organized they actually claim specific Salem neighborhoods.

"You still have gang members who live on the same street but they're from different gangs. We still have time," he said. "We really see the next five years as a critical time where Salem can get in there and start helping those kids, showing them other options."
